Zebel is a LTR retrotransposon found in the zebrafish Danio rerio (Llorens et al. 2009). Its name is an acronym derived from “Zebrafish Bel/Pao element”. Zebel element belongs to the Pao clade (Copeland et al. 2005) within Branch 2 of the Bel/Pao family (Llorens et al. 2009).
The genome of Zebel is 7584 bp in lenght, including LTRs of 701 nt. The internal region of this LTR retrotransposon displays a single ORFs of 2033 amino acids showing the typical gag and pol protein domains of LTR retrotransposons (Llorens et al. 2009).
