Batata is a Ty1/Copia-like retroelement described in the genome of Ipomoea batatas (sweet potato) belonging to Tork clade (Llorens et al. 2009). The genome of this element is 4248 bp in size and displays a single ORF encoding for both the gag and the pol Ty1/Copia-like polyproteins. Due to the presence of several stop codons the sequence analyzed has been obtained by the assembly of adjacent polyprotein regions (GenBank accession: AY830138). Information about the LTRs of Batata retroelement is not yet available.
