Element:Woot

Description

Woot is a LTR retrotransposon characterized in the genome of Tribolium castaneum, most strains of this organism appear to harbor approximately 25-35 copies of Woot per genome (Beeman et al. 1996). Woot belongs, along with other Ty3/Gypsy LTR retroelements, to Osvaldo clade (Malik and Eickbush 1999). The genomic structure of Woot is 12.2 Kb size including LTRs of 3.6 Kb. The internal region of this element displays a Primer Binding Site (PBS) for a tRNAHis, three Open Reading Frames (ORFs) for gag, pol, and int genes, and a Polypurine Tract (PPT) adjacent to the 3´LTR (Beeman et al. 1996).

Figure not to scale. If present, long terminal repeats (LTRs) have been highlighted in blue. Amino acid motifs noted with lines indicate the conserved residues in each protein domain, abbreviations below mean:

MA=matrix PR=protease DU or DUT=dUTPase TM=transmembrane TAV or IBMP=transactivator/viroplasmin or inclusion body matrix protein
