DescriptionBel is a LTR retrotransposon described in the genome of the dipter Drososphila melanogaster (Davis and Judd 1995). Bel gives the name and belongs to Bel clade (Copeland et al. 2005) within the Branch 1 of the Bel/Pao family (Llorens et al. 2009). The genome of Bel is 6126 bp in size, including LTRs of 361 nt. The internal region of this element displays a two ORFs: the smallest of 152 amino acids (aa) codes for an unknown protein while the largest of 1607 aa contains both gag and pol polyproteins which present their characteristics associated domains.
