DescriptionMdg3 is a LTR retrotransposon described in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster (Ilyin et al. 1985). Mdg3 belongs, along with other Ty3/Gypsy LTR retrotransposons, to Micropia/mdg3 clade (Malik and Eickbush 1999). The genomic structure of mdg3 is 5.5Kb in size including LTRs with a size oscillating between 267 and 293 nt (depending on the mdg3 variant). The internal region of this element displays a Primer Binding Site (PBS), a single Open Reading Frame (ORF) that codifies for a gag-pol polyprotein, and a Polypurine Tract (PPT) adjacent to the 3´LTR (Ilyin et al. 1985; Dzhumgaliev et al. 1986; Avedisov and Il'in,Iu. 1995).
