DescriptionGibbon Ape Leukemia Virus (GaLV) is a C-type oncogenic virus that induces myeloid leukemia in young gibbons. GaLV infects an especially large variety of cellular types in various species (Johann, Gibbons and O’Hara 1992; Hunter 1997). This evidence has been useful in developing genetic transference viral vectors in vivo and ex vivo (Miller et al. 1991; Wilson et al. 1989). The genomic structure of GaLV is 8.1 Kb size including pro-5´LTR and pro-3´LTR of 125 and 437 nt, respectively. The internal region of this retrovirus displays a Primer Binding Site (PBS) complementary to a tRNAPro, Open Reading Frames (ORFs) for gag-pol and env genes characteristic of retroviruses, and a Polypurine Tract (PPT) adjacent to the 3´LTR (Delassus, Sonigo and Wain-Hobson 1989).
