This page describes how to edit the wiki for subscribed users. It describes how to use wiki language to edit specific pages and how to edit specific sections.

Creating a new page

Each article has a title. For instance this page has for title "EditorsGuide". To create a new article just add the desired title where "EditorsGuide" currently stands in the title bar.

For instance, to create an article called RetroelementABC simply type into your browser:

https://gydb.org/index.php?title=RetroelementABC

This message will appear:

There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, search the related logs, or edit this page.

Choose to edit the page. You will see a blank page that you will be able to edit and save your page.

Editing an existing page

Simply click on the edit thumbnail (between discussion and history). You will be taken to the source of the page. You will be able to edit/add/remove contents from the current page.

How to use wiki language

GyDB org runs Mediawiki 1.35.0. It accepts both HTML and wiki language.

Basic text formatting

It is preferred to use wiki syntaxis whenever possible.

Character formatting

Italics:

text: replaces <i>text</i> or <em>text</em> html tags.

Bold:

text: replaces <b>text</b> or <strong>text</strong> html tags.

Creating headers and sections

To create headers and sections, we can use the following HTML notation:

Header level one
Header level two
Header level three
Creating internal links

To create an internal link, just type the following:

   Text to show in link

For example, to create a link to the article called "Retroviridae" using the text "See retroviridae article" we use:

   See retroviridae article

And it produces: See retroviridae article

Creating external links

To create an external link, just type the following:

   [url Text containing link]

For example, to create a link to the University of Valencia "http://www.uv.es" using the text "University of Valencia" we use:

   University of Valencia

And this produces: University of Valencia

How to create lists

Unnumbered bullet lists

Use the asterisk * for each line where you want a bullet. Add multiple ones to create a hierarchy. For example, the following :

* Line 1
* Line 2
* Line 3
** Line 3.1
** Line 3.2

Will have the following effect:

  • Line 1
  • Line 2
  • Line 3
    • Line 3.1
    • Line 3.2

Numbered lists

Use the asterisk # for each line corresponding to an numbered item in the list. Add multiple ones to create a hierarchy. For example, the following :

# Line 1
# Line 2
# Line 3
## Line 3.1
## Line 3.2

Will have the following effect:

  1. Line 1
  2. Line 2
  3. Line 3
    1. Line 3.1
    2. Line 3.2

How to add images

Edit the article and insert an internal link to an image like this:

Save the article and a red link to the image will appear. By clicking on this link you will be redirected to the file upload form

Creating tables

Close table
header 1
header 2
header 3

row 1, cell 2
row 1, cell 3
row 2, cell 1
row 2, cell 2
row 2, cell 3
header 1 header 2 header 3
row 1, cell 1 row 1, cell 2 row 1, cell 3
row 2, cell 1 row 2, cell 2 row 2, cell 3

Adding literature database links in articles

For adding literature database links, first locate the entry in our literature database browser and copy its biblioId reference. Then, add an internal link in your article like:

   Text

Phylogenies

Editing the Phylogenies section

Phylogenies are managed by the Phylogeny template.

This template has the following fields:

Adding a new phylogeny

Create a new link like:

   https://gydb.org/index.php/Phylogeny:phylogeny_name

You will be redirected to a page displaying this:

There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, search the related logs, or edit this page.
  • Click on "edit".
  • Paste this template:

  • Fill the template and save.

Change the name of a phylogeny

Click on "Move" tab and give it a new name.

Elements

Left side menu

An article called "MediaWiki:Sidebar" describes the composition of the toolbar. To change it, simply click on the following :

https://gydb.org/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Sidebar

and click on the "Edit" tab.

There, you can add new families, domains and related families.
